Plymouth Barracuda 1970-1974-The Legendary Muscle Car

Plymouth two distinct concepts engineers carved out of clay, both with a Superbird-inspired aerodynamic body, and finally reached a consensus on which an operating concept car could be built. The 1975 Barracuda was planned before the end of the 1970-1974 cycle model. Due to a rapidly changing automotive market, the concepts were broken and the 1975 Barracuda was not put into production. The Barracuda was dropped after 1974, a victim of the 1973 energy crisis

1972 Plymouth Barracuda-The Legendary Muscle Car

In 2007, Motor Trend reported a rumor that Chrysler is considering reviving the Barracuda in 2009.  However, the Barracuda was not reintroduced to the side of the third generation Dodge Challenger.

Car Driver Mr. Ronnie Sox - Four Speed- Mopar Plymouth Race

Ronnie Sox competenty screwed the new 68 Sox & Martin Hemi Barracuda, It was an immediate winner 10 seconds that was getting faster and faster than the team changed their development forward. Recently, the core team for Chrysler's drag racing program, did clinics, S & M ran, and tested hard on their rare days off. It was an all-out effort in total war, designed to dominate in any theater. S & M clinical appearances were often scheduled the same weekend as one big event or a meet staged at points across the country. often the team brought different cars, such as its Road Runner one B-440 wedge block powered GTX, Hemi-powered, and a Hemi-powered Plymouth Super Bird with the NASCAR-style rear wing. Regardless of body style, any car trimmed in flat Sox & Martin colors carried by mail.

It is not only these cars excel in NHRA Super Stock Eliminator, they were also quick in match race trim. This phenomenon has grown from Chrysler, Ford, GM and dislike for disabled drivers running style and disqualifying break outs to go too fast. They preferred to get heads-up and basic run-Whatcha-brung rules. Interestingly, most of this was the first day back a Funny Car Match Race Mania and trails and so loved by fans.

The Hemi Barracudas and Darts were right at home in these events and the heads-up racing game. It was this popularity that led both NHRA and AHRA to offer heads-up racing Pro Stock, beginning with the winter both association serves 70. Bill Jenkins, always one of the toughest competitors S & M, had a breakthrough in the field, running numerous heads-up events and match races with a 2-4 Carbed, Tunnel-Rammed 427 Camaro running the slightest. He dominated the Pro Stock events in early 1970 and AHRA and NHRA races and the NHRA Gatornationals March. M & S caught up quickly and dominated the rest of the season. This run-scan table included a team win by Herb McCandless in Sox & Martin Plymouth Hemi Duster at Nationals. S & M won all other NHRA Pro Stock event this year.

Plymouth Barracuda 1970-1974-legendary Muscle Car

Plymouth also built a special model for 1970: the Plymouth AAR Cuda. AAR was taken from All-American Racers Dan Gurney, who ran 'Cudas in he Sports Car Club of America Trans-Am series race. But while Ford and Chevrolet built special models (Boss 302 Mustang and Camaro Z28) meant to mimic race cars, Plymouth built a street rod. Along with the similar Dodge Challenger T / A, AAR Cuda 'sported a unique 340 cid V8 with 3x2 carbs that pumped out 290 bhp. The exterior was definitely unique, with a matte black fiberglass hood lift-off, through body-side stripes strobe, tri-colored AAR shield, and standard black ducktail spoiler. The AAR 'Cuda also had special shocks and recambered rear springs which raised the rear end 1 3 / 4 inches on the regular 'Cuda which allowed clearance for exhaust pipes that came out in front of the rear wheelwell (after routing through the standard muffler beneath the trunk). It also allowed the use of larger tires in the rear of a first uses the most rear tires of an automobile production.
1971 Plymouth Barracuda

The Plymouth Barracuda continued in 1971 with minor styling changes, including a segmented grille with twin headlamps, dummy front fender vents, and segmented taillights. A full range of engines were available and the performance models were once again called 'Cudas. The AAR Cuda 'was no longer available. To cope with emission laws becoming stricter, Plymouth was forced to detune some of their engines, resulting in a drop in power. Only 115 Hemi 'Cudas were sold and Plymouth decided to retire the Hemi engine before it had to be detuned to meet new emission standards. Therefore, the Hemi would end his reign as the most feared engine and possibly the most influential of the muscle car era.
1972 Plymouth Barracuda

1972 was a sad year for fans of performance as the powerful and the 383 Hemi engines were removed because they could not meet new emission standards. The remaining engines had to be detuned and now valued at net power numbers, which on the surface looked like a huge drop in power. Unfortunately, the top engine choice for the Barracuda was the 340 cid V8 convertible and was no longer available.

1973 Plymouth Barracuda

The six-cylinder engine was removed and the entry level model now had the 318 V8. Optional was the 340 V8 that came standard on the Cuda. "In the summer, the 340 was replaced by a new V8 360 cid, although performance has not improved.
1974 Plymouth Barracuda

1974 was the last year for the truth Barracudas, which continued with 318 and 360 engines. The Barracuda would never come back as a real performance vehicle.

History of Plymouth Barracuda 1967-1974-legendary Muscle Car

1967 Plymouth Barracuda

The Barracuda finally became a true pony car in 1967. The Barracuda was redesigned in a wheelbase, newest and offered a choice of V8s, two V8s and a new 273 cid V8 383 cid. The Slant Six engine was officially dropped. Unfortunately, the engine 383 was so great that the power steering pump could not fit under the hood, so it was not available - resulting in poor handling. The original fastback model now joined by a notchback and a convertible model. The Formula S option package was still available and added a heavy suspension, tachometer, Wide-Oval tires, special trim and emblems.

1968 Plymouth Barracuda

The Barracuda received minor styling changes and greater availability of engines for 1968, with the reintroduction of the 225 Slant Six engine. The top of the line 383 also received a power boost. The 273 cid engines were retired. To give the Barracuda over a performance image, Plymouth quietly built a small number of Hemi powered Barracudas to give to professional drag racers, but these were so rare that they do not help the image of crabs is the Barracuda.

1969 Plymouth Barracuda

1969 was the year that Plymouth finally got serious about performance. They boosted the output of the 383 cc engine to 330 bhp and found room to fit power steering. Plymouth also introduced a cosmetic package built around the Formula S option, which they called Cuda. "The Cuda" could be had with a 275 bhp V8 of 340 or 383, but still not fast enough. Plymouth responded by filling in the triple carb 440 V8 under the hood, the biggest engine available in a pony car. Unfortunately, the larger engine required the elimination of steering again and was only available with an automatic transmission, rear axle as needed to be cushioned against the immense torque of 440. With 57% of car weight on top of the front wheels and the use of drum brakes all, suffered handling and braking.
1970 Plymouth Barracuda

Plymouth finally got the right angle performance for 1970, and were at full strength for him. The Barracuda was moved to the E-body platform, which it shared with the new Dodge Challenger. The Barracuda rode a wheelbase two inches shorter than the similar Dodge Challenger, despite its overall body dimensions were the same. The performance models were called 'Cudas and featured five different V8s, the 340, 383, 440, 440 +6, and the almighty 426 Hemi. The 440 and the Hemi cars received a special performance suspension to put high all that power to the road.

Barracudas came with a standard flat hood, while 'Cudas came with standard dual non-functional hood scoops. Cudas Optional in all "(and standard on Hemi) was very functional shaker scoop, so named because it linked directly to the engine, and poked up through a hole in the hood and, thus, "shake" whenever the engine did.

The Hemi cost $ 871 and was installed on just 652 hardtops (out of 17,242) and 14 convertibles (550) copies. It sported hydraulic lifters and it was easier to tune than in previous years. The 440 was a bargin at only 6 $ 250 and can track the Hemi up to 70 mph. Both engines were difficult to drive: the 440 six vacuum actuated front and rear carbs came with little warning, while the link Hemi throttle hard, sometimes snapped all eight barrels open at once.

The First Muscle Car of Plymouth Barracuda 1964-1966-legendary Muscle Car

The first pony car named Plymouth Barracuda, two weeks before the debut of the Ford Mustang and was quickly eclipsed by the Mustang and Firebird / Camaro, but in 1970, It would make a name for himself when it was available with an engine of his competitors could only dream of the Hemi.
1964 Plymouth Barracuda
In early 1964 the Plymouth Barracuda was launched, two weeks before the Ford Mustang. Then Called the Valiant Barracuda Officially, kept his lower body and the car based on the compact Valiant, but used a fastback super-structure with a huge wraparound backlight -the largest piece of glass ever put on a production car- and stubby trunklid. The interior presented the Signet's bucket seats, and a flip-down rear seat, and security panel for carrying long items. Marketing for the vehicle pointed out its features and design of convenience rather than sporting performance, which would undermine his image as a performance for years to come. Offering engines were the same as the Valiant, with a 170 cid Slant Six at launch, with the 225 Slant Six or 273 V8 as options.

1965 Plymouth Barracuda

1965 saw the introduction of performance option "Formula S", although the Plymouth Barracuda still was far from a performance car. The 225 Slant Six officially replaced the 170 Slant Six as the standard motor.
1966 Plymouth Barracuda

In 1966 The Barracuda has received a facelift as the Valiant, but received its own grill and exterior design. Barracuda different "fish" emblems were added, which would remain until 1970. Engine options remained unchanged.

Comparing E55 Charger-Ford Fairmont 351 2V XA Coupe-Holden HQ 350 2 Door Monaro

Which car is faster E55 Charger, Ford Fairmont 351 2V XA Coupe or Holden HQ 350 2 Door Monaro?

If you really want to know go check the link, Charger Club of WA Click here. Supercar Scare 1972. This was a play written by the journalist, "Mr. Evan Green," who interviewed "Milton Morris," the then Minister of Transport, NSW (May 1965-January 1975) on June 25, 1972.

Milton Morris, and effectively destroyed supercars in Australia alone. While some of what he had to say may have been partially correct writing sensationalist and grossly over stating the situation effectively killed the Phase 4 Falcon, Torana XU2 and the Chrysler R / T E55 Charger V8.

"MILTON MORRIS"
NSW Transport Minister
(May 1965-January 1975).

Here are the facts, Bathurst at that time required 200 examples of a single car model built before he could be entered in the race this rule was referred to as type approval. What was Milton Morris suggested that young people would buy these cars in the second hand market, possibly with mechanical defects in them and be killed on the roads. The newspapers referred to these as bullets Supercars on wheels.

A very noble, but let's look at it for a second using today as an example. Can you imagine buying a 18, a Holden Club Sport (car made by GM-H Special Vehicle Division with a high-performance V8 350) which is only 2 or 3 years? Really? I think not.

To be fair to a balanced argument there were also two notable cases of people speeding through the streets at 150 mph! It does not help the cause or approval. The truth to the matter had little to do with the actual facts.

By the standards of today nothing has changed except the young people are buying Skyline or WRX and RTGs are killing themselves. This car is not the fault is caused by inexperienced young drivers with the lack of advanced driver training.

Perhaps the legislation to prohibit drivers under 25 years of purchasing vehicles performance may be the answer?

In any case the government intervened, saying to the manufacturers if you build these cars will not be doing any business fleet. So where would the government will buy their cars from?

The final nail in the coffin was to Bathurst Specials by car manufacturers that responded to my opinion and it's history.
What went wrong at Chrysler?

First Department of the race was scrapped due to a "U.S. Chrysler" newly appointed executive Ballthrope William, who seemed to react more bluntly supercar scare, buy the book "Hey Charger" to all the facts.

Demolition of the racing department was an unnecessary exercise, as sales of cars were based on how much they showed on the race track especially at Bathurst. As the saying goes, and win on Sunday sell on Monday!
(It should be noted, however, that Ford and Holden also bowed to pressure from the government.)

This can happen again? I doubt, due to the fact the rules have changed to Bathurst and they need no more than 200 cars to be built.
Winning on sale Sunday on Monday?

This statement can be proven though? Yes, you can circuits Chargers competed in New Zealand and won every event for 7 consecutive years. Dealers with unsold stock found their stock sold out on Monday after winning Charger.

Sounds simple to sell me victory Sunday Monday to make some money? Heck it is not because they are in business to do!

There were also problems in front of home in the United States with Chrysler, basically they were leaving through the back door in great shape and has undertaken a massive restructuring of the company. It's easy to point the blame to the U.S. failure to Chrysler Australia. The truth of the matter is if they had kept the program running, perhaps they may have been able to finance their own development and retooling new car. We'll never know.

People without vision always play it safe, and they always lose in the end. Why? Because innovation requires a fertile ground to breed within the racing program was that Chrysler fertile ground. Will Chrysler exec who cut the racing program also condemned to oblivion Chrysler in Australia? In my opinion I believe he did. Well done! It seems hard? It really does not go by car of the year in 1971 to extinction in 1981, sums it right up.

Supercar Soon after the noise had died down, Chrysler did the only thing he could do to make use of the stocks of 340 V8 engine that Chrysler was in his hand quietly put the E55 in theaters, not even release a statement of press! The VH 770 SE E55 340 V8 was marketed as a grand tourer, but a Charger GT badged as an "SE".
How many are left?

According to the information base for six Valiant left logged on the road that includes VJs. I do not believe that my best guess would be correct, perhaps, 15-30 and 60-80 VH VJ. My Internet search shows that there are only a handful posted on the Internet. If all database updates, Papanicolaou Bill Information Valiant then we have the best records in numbers.

Bill, "White Knight" Charger - pitching in red! Of note are the side decals saying Charger, White Knights also had a special logo on the side of the vinyl side.
What are they worth?

This is the million dollar question, it depends a lot of conditions, just say a MINT VH SE E55 with all matching numbers could very well sell for well over $ 80,000 (Confirmed May, 2007). A real fixer upper that is complete rebuild including engine, but with corresponding numbers could go for less than $ 15,000.00.

That said, this is just a rule of thumb guide. Supply and demand will always dictate the price, a specific car may well go beyond $ 80.000 or below $ 5000. Best bet is to do your homework first and always consult your local car club.

If you have to have the SE E55 VH over a decision not to move! If you blink you'll miss it make no mistake these cars are very rare and command a premium price.

Below is my opinion of what to pay E55 Chargers.

  • VH SE E55 - What do you think is a fair price - a friend told me one reported in May 2007 just sold for over $ 90K .*
  • VJ E55 - What do you think is a fair price - I saw one on 14 April 2007 approved $ 60.100 in less .
These prices certainly reflect excellent examples of the E55.

Other Performance Model Chargers

  • No. 1 is the E49 - Rough Guide expect to part with between $ 95,000 to $ 115,000. (VJ E49s can be one or two thousand cheaper than the models R / T).
  • The second is the E38, and - Rough Guide expect to part with between $ 65,000 to $ 95,000.
  • No. 3 is the E37s R / T, E48s $ 45,000 to $ 65,000.
  • No. 4 is the base R / T two barrels $ 40,000 to $ 55,000.
  • No. 5 is the VJ E48s $ 35,000 to $ 45,000.
  • No. 6 is the CL Drifter V8 $ 15,000 to $ 25,000.
  • No. 7 White Knight is the VK up to $ 25,000.
  • No. 9 is the Sportsman VJ up to $ 25,000.
I have reviewed this guide in part due to the recent drop in prices in these cars. A charger base running will still set you back over $ 5000.00.

If you e-mail or call me asking what a particular car is worth I'll just refer you to your club Chrysler for assistance.

A car is only worth what your willing to pay for it!

Finally if you must have a genuine Charger E55 or E49 etc or High Performance Pacer be aware it will cost significantly more than a normal production car.

If you buy a car do not base your upper or lower limit to what you read here call your local car club, car prices can vary dramatically from model to model.

There are links to most sites Chrysler on the links page.

More Chrysler are sold through word of mouth or through car clubs before they hit the market! (So if you are looking for a car, check with your local car club)
If you are considering buying a charger or any older car for that matter you really need to consider all the costs involved. Parts are not available on the shelves at the local car dealership. They can be purchased though the costs are high.

Never buy a genuine "and" car without first inspection car club member!

Mechanical knowledge is not generally available to remember these cars are now more than 30 years, most of the mechanics who worked with them are nearing retirement or have retired.

These RTGs are not Skyline or WRXs these are chrome steel and they need careful handling.
So you do not have the money?

Thank you for taking the time to view the page

What you read here is the result of two years more research I included everything I could find from the Internet plus source material that I have listed.
